DESPITE rain and a chilly night, Wellington Carnival went ahead – much to the pleasure of thousands in the town centre.

Earlier this year it was doubtful the event would even take place but carnival chairman Sharon Collins and her ‘little committee’ overcame the odds to stage the annual free show.

“All things considered Wellington Carnival was a success,” she said yesterday. “I’m proud of what my little committee have pulled off since April.

“We had a couple of last minute entries from Devon but sadly Budleigh Salterton took the decision to cancel.

“The weather gave us a slight reprieve while the procession was going through town but sadly it had made a lot of people’s decisions earlier in the evening.

“That said, a lot of people were watching – but we expect the overall collection to be down compared to last year.

“Due to some technical difficulties on Saturday, the voting for Wellington on CarniApp didn’t open. However, we have now opened the vote for Wellington and it will close on Friday, October 4, at midnight.

“Please vote for your Favourite Float, Walking Entry and Spirit of Carnival. You can download CarniApp for free from the App Store and Google Play Store. You will get one vote per category. The results will be collated with the results from Ilminster, Chard and Taunton, and the overall winner will be announced at the Federation presentation.

“Wellington Carnival is now looking for new members to continue with the Carnival for 2020.”
