A MAN arrested in connection with the rape and assault of a woman in Wellington has been released on conditional bail while a police investigation continues.
The man, aged in his 20s, was arrested in the Hampshire area overnight on Friday to Saturday, May 22 to 23, on suspicion of attacking a woman in the town centre in the early hours of Friday.
The woman reported being punched and raped by an unknown man in Monmouth Gardens, North Street, at about 2.20 am.
The man then drove off in a car.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged, with specialist police officers continuing to offer her support.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: “We would like to thank members of the public who have been in touch offering CCTV and other footage of the suspect vehicle, a white Volkswagen Golf.
“We would also ask people to continue to review any footage they may have of Waterloo Road, North Street, High Street, Fore Street, or Taunton Road between 1 am and 2.30 am on Friday to contact us with any relevant information.
