DISGRUNTLED keep fit fan Scott Chidley has staged a one-man protest outside Wellington Sports Centre.
Mr Chidley, who pays £42 a month to be a member of the centre, says classes are being closed. He also says Better, which runs the centre, is failing to live up to its claims to be a not-for-profit, community-focused business.
He says the Floatfit class he has been attending will cease at the end of this month and the boards have been transferred to another site.
Mr Chidley, from Bampton, said: “What Better says on its website is the opposite of what it is actually doing. Floatfit had struggled with numbers but now it is picking up and I want to stay loyal to Wellington Sports Centre.”
A spokesperson for GLL said: “We have taken the decision to cancel the weekly Floatfit class at Wellington Sports Centre from March 28. Over the past five months the class has been operating at an average of just 43 per cent capacity, with numbers falling as low as five participants in some weeks.
“Low attendance means that the class is not sustainable in the long-term and doesn’t offer best use of our facilities or our staff’s time. The only other class to be cancelled is Water Workout class, again for similar reasons relating to low attendance. We are not reducing staff numbers nor making any staff redundant.
“We are currently planning the introduction of a number of new fitness instructor and gym-based classes. The changes reflect the fact that we constantly review and amend our timetables in response to customer demand and to ensure the best use of our resources. This is just part of normal operating procedure within the leisure industry.”
