‘TRAVELLERS’ who moved onto a field in Wellington at the weekend refused to leave on Monday evening (May 18) despite being issued with eviction notices.
Wellington Town Council, which owns the field off Hoyles Road, employed specialist bailiffs from Bristol-based GRC Group to handle the removal of the caravans.
The company’s representatives attended the site, which is between Webbers Close and Oakfield Park, and issued notices requiring the caravans to be removed by 5 pm on Monday.
But, a council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, as at 7.30 pm this evening, there is still a substantial number of vehicles on site.
“On that basis we have instructed GRC to proceed with the eviction tomorrow (Tuesday) if they have not left the site by then.”
The ‘travellers’ appeared late on Sunday afternoon after bollards blocking vehicular access to the five-acre field had been removed.
More caravans and cars were seen continuing to arrive throughout Monday, while nearby residents reported two men were calling at properties to offer ‘roofing services’.
