A WELLINGTON boot throwing competition designed to promote the town has won the support of Wellington town council to the tune of up to £750.

But the competition, due to take place on September 12, nearly didn't make the agenda at Monday's town council meeting after organisers failed to get details to town clerk Greg Dyke on time.

The delay would have meant discussion would have been delayed unto the council's September meeting, leaving little time for final preparations.

Terry Sandford, chairman of Wellington Chamber of Commerce, told councillors: "We've come up with a low-cost, fun event to promote the town.

"We have already had an overwhelming response from local businesses, many of whom have promised prizes and cups.

"But there are other costs to cover, such as marketing, insurance, and the cost of having members of St John Ambulance in attendance."
