A POLICE investigation remains ongoing after a man was attacked from behind and stabbed in a Wellington residential road.

A suspect remains at large after a male victim, who is aged in his 30s, was approached from behind before being punched and stabbed in the shoulder in what officers have described as an “attempted robbery.”

Following the attack the victim was taken to hospital by the ambulance service and has since been discharged.

Police have described the suspect as a white male, about 5ft 8 ins tall and aged in his early to mid 20s. He is said to have been wearing a dark coloured puffer jacket at the time of the attack.

Officers say they are carrying out CCTV enquiries and that they have carried out additional high visibility patrols in the area while the investigation continues.

Commenting on the attack, Wellington’s Neighbourhood Sergeant Jon O’Connor said while the culprit had not yet been identified, the risk to the public was “low.” He said:

“This was an extremely concerning incident, but we do believe the risk to the wider public to be low.

"Nevertheless, officers have carried out extra high-visibility patrols in the area and continue to work hard to identify the person responsible.
