A HEAD for heights will be needed to meet the latest call for action to tidy up Wellington’s town centre.

Town councillor John Thorne wants a buddleia bush removed from a ledge high on the frontage of the old town hall building – now The Iron Duke public house.

Cllr Thorne, who is also the county councillor for Wellington East, said: “The bush has grown quite a lot recently and it is now beginning to get in the way of the clock face if you look up at it.

“Apart from being unsightly, the buddleia must surely be damaging the stonework and there is going to be a risk of masonry falling down.

“I did ask our town clerk if the community warden we employ for odd jobs around Wellington could maybe abseil down to it and remove the bush, but I was being slightly tongue in cheek about it.

“I am not sure whose responsibility it is, as I believe the clock is owned by the district council, while the building is privately owned.

“Either way, we need to find out and do something before it gets out of hand.”
