THE Tonedale area of Wellington is to be cut off again by road from the centre of the town for four nights from Monday (April 20).
Wessex Water has been granted a traffic order by Somerset Council to shut a 90-yard stretch of Station Road running over the railway bridge.
An official diversion route will be signed taking vehicles via Milverton, Norton Fitzwarren, Silk Mills, in Taunton, and along the A38 back into Wellington.
However, local traffic is likely instead to use the Burchills Hill route into Rockwell Green, leading to congestion on the largely single-track road.
Wessex Water said it needs to carry out ‘supply improvements’ and will close Station Road from 7 pm to 6 am nightly from Monday, April 20, to Friday, April 24.
It is replacing a ‘washout’, a hydrant connection to the mains water pipe in a small covered chamber under the footpath.
It said pedestrians would still be able to walk from Tonedale into Wellington while the work was being carried out.
