THE first anniversary of the coronation of King Charles III was marked in Wellington with a Royal proclamation by town crier Andrew Norris.

Mr Norris was among hundreds of town criers around the country who at noon on Monday (May 6) read a specially-written proclamation approved by Buckingham Palace.

He gave it on the corner of South Street and Fore Street, watched by a number of bemused passers-by.

Mr Norris said he was ‘extremely proud’ to be a town crier, a profession dating to medieval times, communicating important information to townsfolk, such as local bylaws and market days.

He said: “To be able to announce the first anniversary of the coronation of our King and Queen to the residents of my town is a real honour.”

Pageant master of The Royal Proclamation, Bruno Peek, said celebrating the coronation first anniversary was ‘such a glorious occasion for the whole country’.
