PLANS are being put together for Wellington to celebrate the Queen’s forthcoming Platinum Jubilee in style.

Members of Wellington Town Council heard at their latest meeting that the town will be pulling out all the stops to do the Queen proud over the long weekend of June 2-5.

Town clerk Dave Farrow said a street fair will be held in High Street and South Street on Saturday, June 4, and a civic service at St John’s Church that evening.

A Party and Music in the Park event will be held at Wellington Park on Sunday, June 5.

Mr Farrow said neighbours and community groups will be encouraged to have street parties around the town on Friday, June 3.

Councillors are keen that the town also gets involved with a National Beacon Lighting Event on the evening of Thursday, June 2.

They agreed that a beacon should be sited on Hilly Head and discussions will continue about a joint beacon event with Wellington Without Parish Council at Wellington Monument.

A beacon at Hilly Head would be more accessible and visible to people in Rockwell Green and Wellington.

Mr Farrow said: "Initial discussions have been held with the landowner, who agrees in principle to the proposal subject to a detailed agreement."

Councillors gave Mr Farrow the thumbs-up to the proposals.

"This is an exciting package of events for people to enjoy," said Cllr Andrew Govier.
