The woman was driving a Land Rover Discovery Sport which ploughed into a line of parked cars, causing serious damage to four of the vehicles at about 11.15 pm.

Residents heard the crash from inside their homes and they went to investigate. They claimed they restrained a woman until police arrived and the road was closed for several hours.

Residents found four of their cars had been shunted into each other and the Land Rover was left with steam emitting from its engine.

Damage to the four parked cars was estimated at several thousands of pounds, with one, a VW 4x4 immediately being written off.

The Land Rover was removed by a police contractor during the night but the other damaged vehicles were still there on Monday morning with wreckage littering the street.

The woman driver was not thought to have suffered any serious injuries and one resident told the Wellington Weekly: “I am just so thankful there were no pedestrians around.

“It was a really loud bang and when we went outside there were bits of cars everywhere from the impact which must have been at quite a bit of speed.”

A police helicopter coincidentally flew over the area during the drama but was attending another incident elsewhere.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed in a statement that Jessica-Cooper Hogan, 22, of no fixed address, has now been charged with driving a motor vehicle while over the alcohol limit, driving without insurance, and driving without due care and attention.

She was arrested on Sunday (March3 ) and was initially held in custody but was released on unconditional bail, Avon and Somerset Police said.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said Cooper-Hogan was due to appear before magistrates sitting in Taunton on Monday, March 25.
