RESIDENTS of Sandys Moor in Wiveliscombe say they are “fed-up” with the on-going dumping of earth and construction waste at a site alongside their homes.

They say that Somerset Council have failed to control the dumping of the construction waste, which is affecting their well-being.

Earlier this month, they met with Somerset councillor, Dave Mansell, to discuss their continuing concerns.

Cllr Mansell said: “Residents and I have reported the problems for nearly two years. Light industrial units were to be built on the site, but planning permission has not been given and the last application was withdrawn over a year ago.

“Over this time, we have seen thousands of loads from tipper lorries covering the site in massive rows and piles of earth and construction waste. This continues to impact those living alongside. I have never seen such a badly managed site, nor such a failure by the council’s planning service to ensure standard planning controls are put in place.”

A spokesperson for the residents said: “For two years, we have suffered from the noise of lorries tipping and from earth and rubble being buried and spread around the site. In summer months, our homes have been covered in clouds of dust, which has negatively affected health and well-being. Some have been prevented from using their gardens or even opening their windows in hot weather. We have also seen local roads covered in mud. We are completely fed-up. The council should never have allowed this and needs to put a stop to it.”

A planning application to build six light industrial buildings on the site was submitted by SCF Fabrication from Dulverton in January 2024 but later withdrawn.

The site is currently being marketed for sale by Greenslade Taylor Hunt.

Somerset Council has been approached for comment.
