AN elderly motorist was taken to hospital after a crash which partially blocked a Wellington town centre road on Friday afternoon (January 12).

The accident happened in Mantle Street, outside the Blue Mantle guesthouse at about 4.15 pm when a woman driver was thought to have passed out.

Her car careered across the road and collided with a parked van before hitting an oncoming car head on.

An off-duty fire brigade first responder was travelling behind her and immediately provided assistance.

He helped the woman into the Luson GP surgery on the opposite side of the road, where she received First Aid.

An ambulance was then called and the woman was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton.

It was the second car crash in Mantle Street in the space of eight days after two vehicles were in collision at the junction of Champford Lane, blocking the road for about two hours.
