WEEDS have been pulled from town centre hanging baskets after thistles began to grow among the flowers.

In an unusual sight thistles and other weeds were found growing in hanging baskets along the High Street and in Fore Street.

After a resident's complaint, the town council sent workers to turf out the intruders from the baskets.

Two workers were seen on Monday morning, climbing a ladder to wrench out one of the offending thistles.

The baskets were hoisted around Wellington in advance of July's Britain in Bloom contest, which saw horticultural judges descend on the town to grade its greenery.

It remains unclear how the prickly customers came to occupy the baskets, but one resident speculated it could be because of a bad batch of compost containing stray seeds.
