WELLINGTON Bowling Club welcomed teams from three Devon clubs - and all three came along hoping for victory, but the Wellington teams played well with two good wins out of three, writes Martin Speakman.
Mike Copping, Nick Channon and Mike Groves' Lions took a big lead early on against the Marina A team from Dawlish. The visiting side did all they could but the Lions won comfortably 22 – 11.
In their second game, Paul Kelly, Julian Street and Graham Brown's Lions had a bigger fight on their hands. They were 12 – 4 down at the halfway point. They fought back well but could not catch the Marina side who won by four shots 12 – 16.
However, the overall score was a win to Wellington's Lions by 34 shots to 27.
Wellington's Tigers were up against strong opposition from Seaton's B team. Derek Vile, Peter White and Ian Hollingsworth's Tigers set off at a good pace. Their Seaton opponents did all they could but the victory went to the Tigers 24 – 10.
Roger Murphy, Bill Warnett and Tony Gibson's Tigers had a close battle but they lost by four shots in the end 14 – 18.
Wellington's Tigers won their match overall, by 38 shots to 28.
The Wellington Pumas had a very big fight on their hands against strong opposition from the Ottery Falcons.
Phil Wiggan, Ron Elston and Ken Brown's Pumas did all they could but the Falcons were too strong on the day, winning comfortably 24 – 9.
Brian Wombwell, Paul Kelsall and Tony Weston came close. They were only four shots behind at the halfway point but the Falcons picked up the pace in the second half to win it 29 – 12.
The overall score was a victory to the Ottery Falcons by 53 shots to 21.
