WELLINGTON Bowling Club men’s A and B teams were both in action at home over the weekend, gaining close victories over Somerton and Ilminster’s E team respectively, writes Martin Speakman.
The A team fielded three sides and the B team did the same, so all six rinks were in use at the Wellington club.
Mike Copping, Mark Bond, Nick Channon and Mike Groves' A team side were 6 – 10 down after 9 ends but they fought back in the second half for a comfortable 22 – 13 victory.
Pete Nichols, Peter Barlow, Jay Merrell and team captain Phil Ellis did not start too well. They were 0 – 3 down after three ends but they came back well to overtake and romp home in style 22 – 11.
Barry Cutler, Bill Warnett, Graham Brown and Tony Gibson had a close match but their opponents won it by five shots 13 - 18.
The overall result was a win to Wellington's A team 57 – 42.
Rob Newton, Alan Every, Andrew Baird and Darren Sparks' B team side had a very close match but they led 13 – 12 with one to play. Unfortunately for them their opponents picked up two shots in the last to pinch it on the line 13 - 14.
Dave Harrison, Henry Richbell, Roger Murphy and Alan May were one shot down in the first end but they never looked back after that, going on to take a comfortable victory by 24 shots to 9.
John Lane, Ron Elston, Andy Dart and Paul Kelly had a hard battle on their hands against a strong Ilminster side. They did all they could but were always chasing the game and lost it 14 - 23.
The final result though was an overall victory to Wellington's B team 51 - 46.
