A TEAM of ladies from Wellington Bowling Club went to bowl against Minehead Bowling Club while a second team played them at home - and the overall result could not have been much closer.
The Wellington ladies teams have not done as well as they would like this season, so were hoping to do better this time.
In the home game, Thelma Helps, Janet Lovell, Tracey Richbell and skip Angie Moore took the lead early on and with 7 ends to play were leading 15 – 11. But in the last eight ends Minehead came through to pinch it 19 – 17.
In the away game, Liz May, Monica Carter, Ann Cowling and skip Brenda Wilson found themselves in a nail biting match against very strong opposition. With one end to play the teams were level on 12 shots each but the Minehead foursome won the last to grab a close victory 13 – 12.
So Minehead ladies were the overall winners by just 3 shots, 32 – 29.
Meanwhile, in the Mixed Open League, Wellington were home to three teams from the village of Broadclyst in Devon.
Janet Moore, Tony Woollard and skip Paul Kelsall had a difficult job because the opposition was strong. Paul’s team were 12-7 up after 12 ends but Broadclyst came good to pinch it 20-15.
Liz Copping, Andy Darch and skip Richard Whiting gained a good win 17-11 but the Broadclyst team showed off their new bowler, David who had only been bowling for a monthl
On the last rink Geoff Stamp, Lisa Dart and skip Mike Copping were a long way behind in the first half but they came back strongly to win 25-16.
Wellington won it in the end 57-47 in a pleasant and friendly game - more valued for that than the winning of it!
