WELLINGTON Bowling Club's A team have finished top of South West One in the Somerset County Men's League following a good win in their last match of the season - against a visiting team from Crewkerne.

Three good games ended with an overall victory to Wellington and their A side can look forward to playing in a higher division next year where they will meet teams from all across the county to include Bristol and Bath.

The weather conditions for the match, however, were not favourable. There was a terrific downpour before the game causing some flooding on the green which had to be swept away. The ground-staff and helpful volunteers did an excellent job to make sure the game could go ahead.

Mike Copping, Nick Channon, Paul Kelly and Mike Groves' Wellington foursome were on top form. They led from the start and at the halfway point were 11 – 4 ahead. The Crewkerne team struggled to win shots all through the game and the home side cruised ahead for a 14 shot victory 23 – 9.

It was a very different story for Peter White, Mark Bond, Jay Merrell and Phil Ellis. They found themselves up against four very capable Crewkerne bowlers. The Wellington side were 5 – 0 down after four ends. They fought back hard but Crewkerne pinched it on the line by just two shots 17 – 15.

Roger Murphy, Bill Warnett, Tony Gibson and Graham Brown were playing very well from the beginning and they continued their good form all through their game. At the halfway point they were six up at 9 shots to 3. Crewkerne's four did all they could but the home side increased their lead and moved on for a comfortable win 24 – 10 to give Wellington an overall victory by 62 – 36.
