ON a wet and blustery afternoon the Wellington Lions, Tigers and Pumas braved the weather to take on three Devon Bowling Clubs, writes Martin Speakman.
The Lions were the heroes for Wellington. They played a very strong Tiverton A team who were third in the league table coming into this game. The Lions not only won it but they pinched their opponents' league place, moving up from fourth to third.
Tigers and Pumas had close games but lost against strong opposition.
Mike Copping, Nick Channon and Mike Groves' Lions were in fine form on their home green.
They set off at a good pace and although their Tiverton opponents tried their best they couldn't catch them and the Lions won comfortably 17 – 10.
Jay Merrell, Julian Street and Graham Brown's Lions were in trouble. They were 11 – 15 down with the ends to play but they picked up six shots to pinch it on the line 17 – 16.
Their win on both rinks gave Lions an excellent victory by 34 shots to 26.
Roger Murphy, Bill Warnett and Tony Gibson's Tigers were away against a powerful Exonia B team. Tigers played well from the beginning but the Exonia side began to catch up. They came close but it was too late and the Tigers won by one shot, 17 – 16.
Derek Vile, Ian Hollingsworth and David Beaudet's Tigers were unable to keep up with their strong opponents, losing 22 – 14.
The overall score was 38 – 31 to Exonia.
On their home green, Andy Pearce, Alan Every and Andrew Baird's Pumas came close against a Tiverton Canal Club side but lost by 3 shots 18 – 15.
Paul Kelsall, Brian Wombwell and Tony Weston lost theirs too 20 – 9 so the Tiverton club were the overall winners, 38 – 24.
