WELLINGTON’S hopes of winning their first match of the season were dashed when they crashed by eight wickets at home to Yeovil in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League.
Chasing 199 to win, Yeovil raced to victory in less than 20 overs with Siby Chacko scoring 124 off 53 balls - his innings taking only 71 minutes. He cracked 14 fours and ten sixes as he blitzed the Wellington bowling attack.
He was finally out 14 runs short of victory, caught by Oli Beale off the bowling of Nathan Yarde. He shared in a second-wicket partnership of 184 with William Chesterman who was 66 not out, scoring 11 fours and a six.
Wellington’s only other success with the ball was early on in the Yeovil innings when skipper Arron Campbell had opener Mathew Shorto out LBW with the score on one.
Wellington used seven bowlers in their bid to break the second wicket stand, with Campbell taking 1-34 in three overs and Yarde 1-33 in 2.3 overs.
Earlier Wellington, who won the toss and decided to bat first, were soon in trouble as opener Neil Hendy (9), who had made 96 the previous weekend, and Arron Campbell (6) were both back in the pavilion with only 33 runs scored on a bright, sunny day.
Jacob Hurry (33) and Lakshan Edirisinghe (52) put on 33 for the third wicket, and the Sri Lankan shared in a fourth-wicket stand of 58 with Oli Beale (35).
But Chesterman came on to bowl and Wellington began to lose wickets on a regular basis, their last seven wickets going down for the addition of only 71 runs.
Chesterman finished with figures of 4-29 off 9.3 overs while Sam Fuller took 2-25 in nine overs.
On the day Wellington’s score of 198 all out in 43-3 overs was simply not enough.
