WELLINGTON 3rd XI gained a thrilling one-wicket home victory over Ilminster 4th XI in Division Seven South of the Somerset Cricket League on Sunday.

The South Somerset side batted first and were bowled out for 112 with Jonathan Wood top scoring with 35, while Jack Holloway finished with figures of 3-22, Archie Evans 3-14 and Connor Wickenden 3-1.

Wellington were steered to victory by wicketkeeper Max White who scored 35 and Jay Jadeja who was still there at the close on 21 not out, having put on 11 crucial runs with last man Jeet Jadeja (one not out).

The previous day, Wellington went down to a two-wicket defeat against Taunton St Andrews B XI at Bishop Fox’s School - a result which enabled the Saints to move above their rivals into the runners-up spot.

Wellington got to a decent score of 183-7 in their 40 overs with steady batting throughout. Openers Phil Baker (13) and Trevor Brooks (10) put on 31 for the first wicket and there were useful knocks from Max White (35), Craig Schultz (26), Max John (32 not out) and Ben White (20). Jude Hines snapped up 2-35 and Nigel Contreas 2-29.

The Saints’ opening partnership was also worth 31 and they went on to reach their target with two balls to spare. Contreras led the run-chase with 36, while there were useful knocks from Harvey Revolledo (25) and Barry Cohen (20 not out).

This Saturday, August 22, the thirds play at home to Mass 2nd XI. Fixtures: Huntspill & District 2nd XI v Taunton St Andrews B XI, Wellington 3rd XI v Mass 2nd XI, Bishops Hull 2nd XI v Wembdon 5h XI, Taunton Deane 5th XI v Trull 2nd XI.

The following weekend, Wellington 3rd XI are away to Trull 2nd XI who are already sure of finishing top.
