WELLINGTON Bowling Club are celebrating a splendid victory over North Petherton in the quarter finals of the Wedmore Plate.

The Petherton teams put up a good fight but Wellington were on top form and won three of the four games quite comfortably.

On the first rink, Peter White, Roger Murphy, Julian Street and Graham Brown got off to a great start, leading by nine shots to 1 after four ends and at the halfway point they were ahead by 17 shots to 3.

The Petherton side picked up the pace in the second half but were still eight shots adrift at the end. The final score was Wellington 20, North Petherton 12.

Barry Cutler, Bill Warnett, Jay Merrell and Phil Ellis were on a roll. At the halfway point they led by 11 shots to four and adding insult to injury they only allowed their opponents to collect two more shots all game to end up winning it by 24 shots to 6.

It was very different on the next rink. Mike Copping, Mark Bond, Nick Channon and Mike Groves found themselves in a real battle against four very able Petherton bowlers.

With four ends to play Wellington were only one shot down on 12 - 13 - but a win still looked possible. However, the Petherton side were having none of it. They gave no more shots away to win by seven, 19 – 12.

Darren Sparks, Ian Hollingsworth, Tony Gibson and Paul Kelly did not get off to a good start but they picked up the pace in the second half and stormed ahead for a huge win, 30 – 11 which gave Wellington an excellent overall victory by 86 shots to 48.
