WELLINGTON 2nd XI are 37 points from safety in Division One of the Somerset Cricket League following a 95-run defeat at Weston super Mare 2nd XI last weekend as, with one month of the 2026 season to go, it will be two of Cranmore, West Monkton and the Red and Blacks’ second string which will be going down, writes David Derrick.

Wellington had won the reverse fixture back at the end of May, but there was not going to be a repeat as WSM chose to bat first on winning the toss and on a parched and baked outfield run making opportunities a plenty were not turned down by the hosts.

They totalled 289 all out with five balls to spare as Davis with 82 anchored matters for the Seasiders as he and lower order efforts of 36, 37, 19 and 20 from Bliss, Hearse, Singh and Huke raised the home score from a perilous 107-6.

Andy Hurry and Basha Mohammed had taken the new ball for Wellington and had four of the first five WSM wickets to fall to their names but the last four wickets added 182 runs. Wickets were taken by Rob Moysey, Kevin Symons and Aayan Kazi to wrap things up, but nearly 300 runs were needed to win by Wellington.

Rob Moysey with 39, Tom Winter with 36 and Paul Short with 33 made inroads into the WSM total, but it was always going to be tough to score at six an over throughout and so it proved.

S.Trego with 3-28 in nine overs returned the best analysis for WSM as Wellington held them at bay until the last over. WSM took a full 35 points to Wellington's not at all shabby haul of nineteen.

Wellington entertain Winscombe at the Lloyd and Whyte Cricket Ground on Saturday, August 8 (1p.m.).
