WELLINGTON 2nd XI travelled to Chard CC on Saturday for a T20 tri series event featuring the Red and Blacks’ second string, the home club's reserves and another club local to the South Somerset area in South Petherton CC who fielded their first team, writes David Derrick.

The schedule for the day was that Wellington would take on Chard at 10 a.m. and South Petherton at 1p.m. with Chard and South Petherton meeting in the day's last game at 4p.m..

Chard 2nd XI 179-3, Wellington 2nd XI 51: Wellington asked the host side to take first knock in the opening game and it was a convincing victory that unfolded for Chard in the end. Legg with 46 and Scott with 52 not out anchored the Chard batting effort with an opening stand of 123 that was ended by a direct hit run out by Ben White who has returned to Wellington after over a decade away.

Thompson with 35 helped move Chard towards their final total of 179-3 as Jake Nichol and Charlie Burrough each took a wicket in their second spells for Wellington.

When it came to Wellington's turn to bat it was not easy going at all as no double figure scores were recorded as Barrows with 4-14 in four overs and Riley with 3-10 did the job for Chard as they romped to a 128 run win.

South Petherton 167, Wellington 2nd XI 76: South Petherton chose to bat first on winning the toss and saw their opener Sampson-Barnes with 52 anchor their innings and once he was dismissed by Archie Evans (2-23) and his leg spin, Wellington saw their way clear to dismissing the side from near Yeovil who play in the middle echelons of the Somerset League with further potent leg spin from each of Aayan Kazi (2-24) and Rob Moysey (4-20). Jake Nichol took the other two wickets for Wellington.

Wellington found it tough with the bat once more as their score dipped to 28-6 as Rowe took three wickets for no cost in three overs. Aayan Kazi with 20 not out and his skipper Rob Moysey with 15 displayed some grit to take the score to 59-7 with latter efforts from Ben White, Jake Nichol and Tony Hutchings prolonging the Wellington innings until the 18th over by which time the Red and Blacks were all out for 76, so leaving Petherton winners by 91 runs. This result set up a Chard 2nd XI v South Petherton final as the last game of the day.

Chard 2nd XI 137-7, South Petherton 130-6: Chard 2nd XI took the overall plaudits on the day with a seven run success in the final fixture. Batting first the home side, who won the toss, saw their effort with the willow balanced by 30 from Scott and 25 from Clancy with Petherton sharing the wickets around equally. When they chased Harris with 39 showed Petherton the way as they closed in on three figures with three wickets down, but Legg with three wickets and J.Dalwood with two held their nerve to see the host side to a seven run win and the day's bragging rights.

It was a compelling day’s cricket that was very well hosted by Chard CC.
