WELLINGTON’S football manager Clive Jones is stepping up his search for a new goalkeeper.

Jones needs to replace Mitch Woodgate who wants to play as an outfield player this season and has the blessing of Jones.

“I’ve talked to one or two goalkeepers but I’ve had no luck so far,” said Jones who is preparing for his second full season in charge. “But I will get one.

“Finding a new goalkeeper is my number one target. I need to find a good goalkeeper who can play regularly.”

Meanwhile, Jones has been boosted by the news that defender Jack Porter, who is in the RAF and lives in Oxfordshire, wants to continue playing for Wellington.

Jones said: “I really thought we would be losing Jack. He’s a classy player and he gives you everything.

“This follows last week’s boost that centre back Kae Fisher will be remaining despite offers of money from other clubs.

“We don’t pay our players so it’s great that he will be staying. Again he’s a class player.”

However, Jones has been disappointed by the decision of one or two players who have told him they will be training with other clubs.

“They haven’t told me they’re leaving. If they want to go, they can go. I don’t want any players who I’ve have to persuade to stay. I want them to want to play for the club.

“We have a very good team spirit within the first team and you’d have difficulty in finding it as good elsewhere.

“I want to get all my players signed up as soon as possible and continue planning for the new season.”

Wellington will again be playing in Division One of the Toolstation League which will include two new teams – Bishops Lydeard and Malmesbury Victoria – who were both elected at last week’s annual meeting of the league.

Lydeard, of course, will provide Wellington with two derby games.

The club’s annual meeting takes place in the clubhouse next Wednesday, June 22 (8 p.m.).
