WELLINGTON’S soccer manager Clive Jones says he’s confident of retaining the services of last season’s top scorers Jack Taylor and Ian Bellinger.

The pair, who scored 43 goals between them last season, live in the Bridgwater area and their home club have tried to persuade them to sign for them.

But Jones said last night: “Both have told me they want to stay. They say they have enjoyed their football with Wellington and want to take the step up to play in the premier division of the Toolstation League.”

Taylor joined Wellington from Berrow at the beginning of last season and scored 22 goals, his aggressive style proving a handful for defenders.

Bellinger, who netted 21 goals and was with Wellington before Jones took charge, has a good shot on him and does not give defenders any peace.

“I’m gradually getting around to seeing all the players individually,” added Jones. “That’s the way I like to do it. They’ve been given some time off and now they must make that commitment for next season.”

Wellington lost only four matches in winning the first division championship in the Toolstation League last season and Jones expected some of his players to become targets by other clubs.

“I’m pleased with how things are going at the moment,” he said. “I think the fact players want to stay speaks highly of the club.

“I have said all along I want to keep every player. I want to see what we can do in the premier division.”

Wellington have four pre-season friendlies arranged so far - all away - against Exmouth Town, Elmore, Witheridge and Axminster. Jones is looking for one more warm-up game - preferably in Somerset.

Wellington’s players report back for pre-season training on Thursday, July 6, a week later than usual.
