WELLINGTON’S football squad has been boosted by the early return of Tom Hawkings who can play both in attack or defence.
Young Hawkings last played for Wellington in their 3-1 home win over Bridgwater Town in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League on Good Friday before jetting off to New Zealand. It enabled Wellington to pull off the season’s double against the former Southern League outfit.
“I didn’t expect him back until the end of the year, so this is a very nice surprise for us,” said Wellington boss Clive Jones.
“He plays both football and rugby but he’s assured me he wants to play football.
“He was outstanding against Bridgwater and ruffled a few of them up. He is equally as good as a striker or centre back, so he’s a very useful player to have.”
So far Jones has signed only two new players – midfielder Jamie Hartness, who spent three seasons as part of Exeter City’s youth set-up, and centre back Tom Short who was with Willand Rovers last season.
Jones is hoping to sign a new centre back and striker this week. “I have been talking to the players and I have had good conversations with them,” he added. “I’m quietly confident.”
Wellington, who were due to play their first pre-season friendly at Chard last night, continue their build-up to the new season with another warm-up game on Friday away to Sidmouth Town.
Others arranged are: July 20 Crediton, 24 Barnstaple Town; 30 Witheridge, all away.
Wellington have lost three key players from last season’s squad - Ian Bellinger and Tom Ellis, who have both joined Bridgwater, and Sam Towler who is trying his luck with Tiverton Town in Southern Premier. Towler turned down a possible move to Bridgwater last season.
Former first team manager Mike Hawes has agreed to help Paul Pocock run Wellington’s Under 18 side who play in the Somerset Floodlit Youth League.
“Mike will be involved in both the administrate and the playing side,” said Pocock.
