DESPITE a disappointing season, Wellington’s football boss Clive Jones has retained every member of his first team squad, writes Barry Knott.
But he has warned them: “I am looking to strengthen the squad with four or five new players to freshen things up.
“Members of the present squad will have to prove themselves. We have been poor for the past couple of months and it’s not acceptable.
“I have to do something because we cannot go on like this. I also have to prove to them that I am the right man for the job.
“The club and supporters deserve better. There is no magic cure.”
And he added: “I normally have May off but I certainly won’t be doing that this year.
“I shall be working hard to get a squad together which the Wellington club deserve.”
Meanwhile, Wellington ended their season in 16th place in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League after losing their last three matches, the latest a 4-0 defeat at Clevedon.
“We were poor,” said Jones. “We were outplayed in all departments and never looked like winning.
“One of our problems this season has been lack of consistency. I want players who are fully committed to playing in the Western League. I don’t want to have to keep changing the side every weekend.
“You have to have a settled side - and that means commitment.”
Wellington won 12 of their 38 league matches and finished with 39 points. Only four teams finished below them.
Jones’ former club Willand Rovers won the title, finishing two points clear of second-placed Plymouth Parkway. Bitton were third and Bridgwater Town fourth.
At the other end of the table, former Southern League club Shortwood United finished bottom, winning only one league game all season.
