WELLINGTON football boss Clive Jones will be staying with the Toolstation League club for at least another season.
He joined Wellington in the summer and has already made a big impact with his infectious approach to the game.
He took over from Mike Hawes who had begun the process on putting the side back on an even keel during the previous two seasons.
Jones, who had 15 successful seasons with Willand Rovers, says he wants to stay on and continue ‘the job I set out to do’.
He said yesterday: “I have really enjoyed it at Wellington. I get on well with the committee and everyone connected with the club.
“We have made progress but we still have a long way to go. I want to give it a go next season. It took me a while to get over to the players the way I wanted us to play.”
Wellington played a number of their early games this season away and struggled. But they have now become very competitive and have been moving up the table.
Club chairman Mike Hall said: “We would love Clive to stay. He has done a fantastic job for us - not just on the field but off it too.”
Meanwhile, Wellington are scheduled to play away to Cheddar in the first division tonight. They drew at Cheddar on the very first day of the season.
“They are a good side - they really impressed me,” said Jones whose young side have only five more away games and 12 at home.
“He has appealed for people to come to the ground and support the side. It makes such a difference having a big crowd,” added Jones.
Wellington have another match on Saturday – home to Chippenham Park (3.00).
Wellington Reserves, who have yet to play a game this year, play away to Westexe Rovers in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League while Hemyock are away to Tipton St John in Division Two.
Wellington Thirds are home to Elmore in Division Seven at the Recreation Ground.
Wellington’s scheduled home game against Almondsbury UWE on Saturday was called off because the pitch was flooded.
“We took the decision to postpone it at 10.00 in the morning,” added Hall. “There were pools of water everywhere. It was not a difficult decision.”
Only one match was played in the first division on Saturday with Chipping Sodbury beating Keynsham Town 4-1 away to go top of goal difference from Chard Town who have a game in hand.
