WELLINGTON’S soccer boss Clive Jones says he will stop rotating his squad after two forthcoming cup matches.

He said yesterday: “I have a strong squad and have been changing the side most weeks. But it’s getting to the half-way mark in the season and I have now got to play my best side. The league is my priority.

“I have got to know the players very well and what they can do. Players will now have to fight for their places.

“I now have a good idea as to who is good enough to stay in the first team.

“Those not in the side will have to show they are good enough.”

Wellington play at home to Street, who play in the premier division of the Toolstation, in the first round of the Les Phillips Cup on Saturday (3.00).

Les Phillips was a popular former chairman of the league who died some years ago.

The following Tuesday Wellington play away to Bath City in the first round of the Somerset Premier Cup. City play in Vanarma National South but much will depend on how strong a side they will field against Wellington.

Meanwhile, Jones described the weekend’s 4-0 home win over Malmesbury Victoria in the first division of the league as “a fantastic result.”

He added: “They were all over us in the first 30 minutes - we couldn’t get out of our own half.

“Ian Bellringer’s opening goal to put us ahead was against the run of play – the keeper should have done better.

“But we went on to play much better in the second half and deservedly win the game.”

Wellington’s victory on Saturday enabled them to improve their goal difference and to stay on level points with leaders Keynsham Town with a game in hand.

Keynsham and Wellington have also opened up a six-point gap between themselves and third-placed Cheddar.

Wellington Reserves, who lost 3-0 away to Witheridge Reserves in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League on Saturday, are without a match this weekend.

Hemyock, now fifth in Division Six with games in hand on all the teams above them, are away to Exwick Village who have a 100 per cent home record.

Wellington Thirds, top of Division Seven, are home to Exmouth Spartans Thirds (2.15).
