WELLINGTON 1

CRIBBS 2

WELLINGTON lost out to a late goal for the second time in four days in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League at a wind-swept Playing Field last Saturday.

Having taken a point away to title favourites Plymouth Parkway – again conceding a late goal only the previous Saturday – Wellington boss Tim Legg will be disappointed by two home defeats on the trot.

Legg, who chose to leave himself out of the side again, said: “I thought it was a much improved performance. We are having plenty of plenty of possession but are not taking our chances. We don’t have a Jack Taylor (now with Bridgwater Town) who can score goals regularly.

“At the moment scoring goals is a massive problem. We also need to score at the right times.”

There was little action in the first 20 minutes but Wellington’s skipper Glen Wright was close to putting his side ahead when his goal-bound header smacked against a defender half-way through the half.

Wellington goalkeeper Tom Welch, enjoying a fine season, brought off a fine save in the 39th minute but could do nothing to prevent Cribbs taking the lead four minutes later, being beaten by a header from the experienced Ross McErlain.

Welch did well to prevent Cribbs taking a 2-0 lead by saving from Dan Webb whose shot took a deflection in the 59th minute and the Wellington goalkeeper was fortunate when a shot by Matt Spiller evaded everyone but came back off a post.

Wellington, riding their luck at times, equalised in the 62nd minute when Jesse Howe hit home a tremendous 25 yard shot.

A rare mistake by Welch almost resulted in a second goal for Cribbs but second-half substitute Steve Murray’s header dropped the wrong side of an upright.

The home side suffered a cruel blow in the 86th minute when Murray made space for himself in the penalty box before scoring, the ball taking a deflection before beating Welch. Despite losing, Wellington held on to 17th spot in the table.

Wellington: Tom Welch, Josh Champion, Jack Lewis, Tom Davies, Jason Quick, Miles Quick, Scott Merritt (Jamie Vaughan-Ryall 62 minutes), Glen Wright (capt), Jesse Howe (Jack Porter), Mason Raymond, George Sinnott. Substitute: Tim Legg (not used). Match sponsor: Nissan South West. Attendance: 75

WELLINGTON Ladies, beaten by leaders Stockwood Wanderers last weekend, are home to Paulton Rovers Reserves in Division Two (Flexi) of the Somerset Women’s Football League on Sunday (2pm).
