WELLINGTON manager Tim Legg will be hoping for an early Christmas present by finally getting his first win under his belt since taking over the job in October.
Legg has only picked-up one point from seven outings in the Premier Division of the Toolstation Western League and that came on his first game in charge back on October 19 and a 1-1 draw with Cadbury Heath.
But since then the Tangerines have suffered defeats against Shepton Mallet (twice), Cribbs, Clevedon Town, Plymouth Parkway and Bitton.
The most recent defeat last weekend was the heaviest since Legg took over and a 5-0 drubbing at home against Shepton.
Wellington’s paltry haul of just four points from their last ten games has seen them plummet to the bottom of the table and they are only saved from the indignity of propping up the division by Chipping Sodbury Town having an inferior goal difference.
There are now three matches between now and Christmas Day and Legg will be hoping to finally find that elusive victory to boost spirits.
All of those fixtures are at home and they begin on Wednesday (December 11) when Street are the visitors in a 7.45pm kick-off.
Keynsham Town come to Town on Saturday (December 14) in a 3pm start and then a week later Wellington entertain table-toppers Bradford Town on December 21 in another 3pm kick-off. Wellington’s final game of 2019 comes on Boxing Day (December 26) when they travel to Bridport in an early 1pm start.
Legg has had to do a lot of rebuilding since taking over the manager’s job with many players exiting the club and following previous boss Clive Jones to pastures new.
He knows only too well, however, that it takes time to get a new team clicking, but equally realises that he will need to start getting points on the board if Wellington are to move away from the wrong end of the table.
But while a run of bad results has seen Wellington go down the ladder, the Tangerines will know that a good festive period could prove a perfect tonic in readiness for the all-important second-half of the campaign.
Wellington’s first game of 2020 comes on January 4 at home when Westbury United are the visitors in a 3pm start.
Although all games are hard for Wellington at the moment, they might have one eye on picking up valuable points in the forthcoming games against Keynsham (16th in the table) and Bridport (18th).
But one thing is for sure – they will battle to preserve their Premier Division status.
