WELLINGTON Association Football Club made a working profit of £10,000 during the past year, it was revealed at Tuesday’s annual meeting, writes Barry Knott.
Reg Oxley, treasurer for the past seven years, told members that takings from the clubhouse bar produced most profit of £20,000 but the club’s main expense was running about 30 teams.
The club had also paid off the final instalment of a long-standing £5,000 loan to St Austell Brewery.
He thanked all those who had supported the club over the past 12 months, including the many volunteers who had given their services and time without payment.
He said if staff had been paid the club would not have been able to turn in such a profit.
First team manager Clive Jones had been promised a playing budget for next season to cover the expenses of players travelling from away.
Meanwhile, two of Wellington’s most influential players, Glen Wright and Tim Legg, have agreed to sign again for next season.
Wright captained the side about 20 times in the absence of Sam Bryant, while the experienced Legg is valued highly by Clive Jones.
Apart from talking to about 20 potential new players, Jones is also seeing what players of last season’s squad plan to stay on.
“At the moment no-one has told me they are leaving, added Jones. At present he is facing competition to retain Josh Wadham who joined Wellington from Toolstation League champions Street last summer.
“Understandably everyone is talking to him,” said Jones. “But obviously I would like him to stay.”
Teenagers Joe Wylie (16) and Lewis Pocock (17), who both broke into the first team last season, are keen to remain with Wellington.
“I’m not expecting miracles next season, but we have to play better,” said Jones.
