IT is not just traders and businesses which are struggling financially – local sports clubs are in meltdown.

Wellington Rugby Club were set to play a derby match at home to Wiveliscombe in Western Counties West over the weekend.

They would have expected a crowd of at least 500 – and even more if the weather was good. The teams have already played each other twice, with Wellington winning one match and the other ending in a draw.

“We have been getting good home crowds this season but this would have been our biggest,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland.

“The stand would have been full and the clubhouse would have been particularly busy. We’ve also had to cancel bookings in the clubhouse, which are also financially rewarding.

“But, of course, more important things are stake at the moment. The most important is for people to stay safe and be sensible.”

No more rugby will be played at the Athletic Ground this season because league matches have been cancelled.

It means that Wellington and Wiveliscombe will again be playing in Western Counties West next season.

Wellington Association Football Club, which runs nearly 30 teams, shut its clubhouse on Monday of last week.

“Obviously it is costing us financially but much depends on when we can re-open,” said the soccer club’s treasurer, Reg Oxby. “We too have had to cancel events in the clubhouse.”

With the Toolstation League deciding to make the present season null and void, Wellington now know they will again be playing in the Premier Division next season.

Until recently, they were fighting a relegation battle – but that dogfight is over.

Wellington have also cancelled their annual dinner at the Beambridge Inn in May and the Toolstation League have called off their annual convention at the end of the season.
