WELLINGTON’S football manager Clive Jones says he will have talks with the club later this month to discuss next season.

The 54-year-old Jones is in his fourth season with Wellington, having enjoyed 15 successful seasons in charge of Willand Rovers.

Jones steered Wellington to the first division title in the Toolstation League in his second season, but has found life in the premier division tough.

“My aim when I came here was to win promotion in three seasons, and we did it in two which was probably one season too early,” he said.

“I think we are playing better football than last season but now I want to start winning games. It is very difficult to compete with the top clubs in this division whose players are being paid.

“Since I have come here I think we have made progress. Now I want the team to be as good as other teams.

Jones, who has had offers this season to join three other clubs, added: “I am not paid by Wellington but I knew this when I came here.

“I think we have done alright since I’ve been here but other people might think differently. We have struggled all season to field a settled side for various reasons.”

One of the frustrating things for Jones has been the loss of six good players to league rivals Bridgwater Town, including Jack Taylor who has already netted 50 goals for his new club since joining them less than 18 months ago.

Jones has now got to tell the club how he would like things done next season and see whether club officials agree.

“I would obviously like them to think on the same lines as I do,” he said. “One major improvement at the club has been the atmosphere in the clubhouse after games. It’s brilliant.”
