WELLINGTON were unlucky to lose 3-2 away to top of the table Chard Town in South Division of the Western Counties Floodlit Youth Football League in an entertaining match in mid-week. The Tangerines travelled to Zembard Lane with four players missing through injury and another suspended, leaving them slightly thin on the ground.

The game started fairly evenly, with Wellington attacking down the slope and Joshua going close in the early stages.

Chard almost took the lead in the ninth minute but Sam produced a great stop in the Wellington goal. Three minutes later, a chance fell to Fred at the other end but he was unable to hit the target.

Wellington’s hard work paid off in the 25th minute when Ed’s flick found skipper Ollie who made no mistake in front of goal to put the visitors ahead.

Three minutes later, however, Wellington conceded a penalty which was struck hard into the side of the net to make it 1-1.

Wellington regained the lead in the 36th minute when Ed nutmegged his man before sliding the ball into the middle of the box for Marley to tuck home.

Defending the slope in the second half, Wellington started well but Chard found an equaliser in the 56th minute.

Then, within the blink of an eye from the restart, a defensive error allowed the hosts to strike again and turn the game around at 3-2. The remainder of the contest continued in much the same vein, with Wellington pushing hard for an equaliser but unable to find the goal their efforts deserved before the final whistle.

This was the South Somerset side’s third win from three matches and enabled them to go top of goal difference from Street, with Sherborne Town in third spot.
