WELLINGTON Wildcats gained their first victory of the season when they beat Paulton Rovers Ladies Reserves 3-0 in Division One of the Somerset County Women’s League at the Carly Press Ground.

Having defended a corner and absorbed some pressure, Wildcats began to grab a foothold in the middle of the pitch and through both wide areas with Charlotte and Orlaith both looking dangerous.

Nieve and Leah both went close and midway through the first half, a perfect through ball by Milly found Orlaith one-on-one with the keeper and her fine shot produced a diving stop by the keeper with Charlotte reacting well to the loose ball to score her first Wildcat goal.

Paulton tried to find a way back into the game, but Lola, Char and Clare worked well to force any attacks down the flanks where Rob and Taiya cleared any danger.

Wildcats continued to press using accurate passing and speed, Nieve went close on 40 minutes and then, from a corner, Milly got the ball to Nieve who beat the keeper at full stretch to double the lead right at the interval.

Wildcats came out of the blocks with a renewed vigour in the second half, retaining the ball well and, on 48 minutes, Nieve broke clear from midfield and carried the ball to the box and calmly slot home to make it 3-0.

As the game settled with Wildcats dictating play, debutants Isla replaced the excellent Lola in midfield, U16s’ Immy made her first appearance at right back and Jess slotted into centre back.

Wildcats maintained the momentum and Milly and Nieve in particular dominating the midfield and Isla looking composed behind. Lola and Char were reintroduced for the final part of the game.

Player of the Match (sponsored by Mundy Veneer) went to Milly (sponsored by Monument Fuel) who put in her performance of the season.
