WELLINGTON Wildcats fought out a 3-3 away draw with last season’s Under 12 champions Bishops Lydeard in Under 13 South section of the Somerset Girls Football League, writes Georgia Purdy.

On a hard and bumpy pitch Wildcats started brightly but did not manage to deal with the bounce of the ball initially. This led to them finding themselves a goal down when the Lydeard striker latched on to a wide ball and a speculative cross/shot managed to squirm in. Lydeard quickly doubled their lead when a similar cross wasn’t dealt with and the Wildcats conceded an own goal.

Wildcats came out firing for the second half and quickly halved the lead when a long clearance from Maria G wasn’t dealt with by the keeper and the ball sneaked in. Wildcats were soon level when Sara had a shot on goal which the goalkeeper parried but only to the feet of Emilia S who tapped home.

The fightback was completed when a long kick from Remi S in goal put Sara M through and she neatly finished off for a 3-2 lead.

In the dying seconds Lydeard’s striker found herself in between two Wildcat defenders and she managed to break through on goal to deny the Wildcats a win. Player of the match Emilia S.

Wellington Wildcats’ Under 15s were back to full squad against Ilminster in a highly competitive fixture which ended goalless in Division One. The football being played by Wellington was the best they have produced. Playing 2 up front with Ruby and Cheyenne was working well and giving Ilminster a tough time.

The attacking play Ilminster did produce was dealt with well by Georgie L, Chloe P, Gracie L and the ever outstanding Anya S. Wellington were winning the midfield battle with Maisie W and Leah W controlling things. The only thing missing was that goal and it was goalless at the break.

The second half was very much like the first half. Cheyenne and Ruby worked with each other to get through on goal but just couldn’t get that important goal. They will have been disappointed not to have won.

Wellington Wildcats U16s gained a 3-1 home win over Long Ashton Griffins - their third victory in four games.

Wildcats settled into the game early, making some fine passes and controlling play. Using the wings with Lola and Immy found space to stretch the play. A cross in to the box saw the keeper fumble and Immy pounced to open the scoring.

Rotating players allowed the wildcats to keep up the tempo but a powerful Ashton freekick beat the keeper to make it equal at the break.

Wildcats’ performance in the second half was sharp and composed. Isla, Frankie, Faith NH, Faith D, Lacey and Lily in the middle dictated play, creating opportunities. The ball found Lily from 20 yards out who hit an electric shot over the keeper, and on 60 minutes, on her final play of the afternoon, Emilia found space, broke through to extend the lead.

The final quarter saw a lot of pressure on Wildcats, but Willow, Darcey and Amelia held firm, while captain Jess, alongside debutant Georgie L in the centre , worked hard to thwart opportunities and keeper Sophie commanded her box and used her excellent kicking to clear danger. Player of the match: Lola.
