WIVELISCOMBE and North Petherton fought out a 29-29 draw in Regional Two South West before a good sized crowd at The Rec, writes Roger Bellamy.
Playing down the slope in the first half Wiveliscombe took an early lead after a period of pressure in the visitors twenty two resulting in a try from prop Matthew Ellis.
Wiveliscombe’s flyhalf Olly Standbury increased the home team’s lead with a penalty on twenty minutes.
North Petherton had periods of pressure from both forwards and backs which produced an opening created by their threes which was finished off by fly half Toby Hallet with an unconverted try,
Wiveliscombe’s scrum half Richard Baker was never far from the action and increased his team’s lead with a fine try. Standbury converted to give Wivey a 15pts 5pts lead at half time.
The visitors reduced Wiveliscombe’s lead with a second try from Hallet which he converted followed by a penalty shortly afterwards.
The game became increasingly tense with both teams receiving yellow cards at regular intervals, Wiveliscombe were down to thirteen players at one time and did well to stay in the game.
Wiveliscombe took the lead through a second try from prop Matt Ellis after good work from his fellow forwards, with Standbury converting.
Petherton pulled level with an identical try from their forwards with Tasman Scott scoring and Hallet converting.
The visitors took the lead for the first time in the game with their fourth bonus point try, prop Lewis Phillips scoring from a maul.
Opportunities were still there for both teams right up to the final whistle and Wiveliscombe levelled the score through hooker Tom Stone while Standbury converted.
