WELLINGTON went down to their second rugby defeat in eight days when they lost 61-5 away to Clifton 2nd XV in Counties One Western North.

Wellington began well enough and were unfortunate to go behind when Clifton snapped up an unconverted try after 18 minutes against the run of play.

They added a converted try not long after before Wellington reduced the deficit with a try by Ben Hayman which went unconverted.

However, Clifton turned the screw before the interval, and piled on the pressure with four tries which were all converted to lead 40-5 at the interval.

Any thoughts of a fightback by Wellington were dashed early in the second-half as Clifton scored their seventh try of the match, which was also converted, to go 47-5 up.

The home side added an eighth try, also converted, to lead 54-5 and scored their last converted try when Wellington were down to 13 players to round off a comfortable victory.
