UNDERSTRENGTH Wellington Wanderers produced a performance full of heart, determination and quality football despite slipping to a 4-1 home defeat against Wembdon in Division One of the Under 12 section in the Taunton Youth League.

With injuries and unavailability leaving Wellington with just eight players, and nearly a third of the squad missing, the challenge was always going to be a significant one. However, Wanderers refused to be overawed and represented both themselves and the club with tremendous pride.

Wembdon made their numerical advantage count during the first half and went into the break holding a 2-0 lead. Despite the difficult circumstances, Wellington continued to look to play football, showing composure on the ball and trying to build attacks whenever opportunities arose.

The second half saw a much more determined Wellington side emerge. Showing greater steel and belief, the hosts began to compete strongly and were rewarded when an excellent team move resulted in Rex B finding the net to make it 2-1.

This goal sparked Wellington into life and they enjoyed their best spell of the game. Chances came and went, and on another day they could easily have added two or three more goals. Their commitment, to keep playing positive football deserved greater reward.

Unfortunately, with only eight players available, fatigue gradually became Wellington’s issue. As tired legs began to show late in the contest, Wembdon capitalised and added two further goals to give the scoreline a harsher look than Wellington’s efforts deserved.

Despite the result, this was a very good game and every Wellington player should be thoroughly proud of the football, effort and attitude they displayed.

A big thank you also goes to the parents who helped run the line and organise the Respect Barrier on the day. Finally, thank you to Roadchef for their continued support as sponsors of the team’s playing shirts.
