DESPITE taking a shock lead, Wellington were well beaten 7-1 at home as St Blazey continued their undefeated start in the Jewson Western League’s Premier Division.
The visitors threatened after five minutes when defender Jack Lewis produced a great block on the line before they found the net, only for the ‘goal’ to be ruled out for offside.
But it was Wellington who broke the deadlock after 16 minutes. Max Edgecombe crossed and striker Alfie Barrett marked his debut by sending a looping header over the keeper.
St Blazey drew level in the 28th minute through Kai Burrell. His first effort was saved by keeper Luke Vernon but Burrell reacted quickly to send the rebound in off the underside of the bar.
The game swung decisively in the visitors’ favour after Wellington were temporarily reduced to ten men in the 33rd minute when Edgecombe was sent to the sin bin.
Four minutes later, St Blazey were awarded a penalty and Burrell made no mistake from the spot. Wellington’s task became even tougher as the visitors struck twice more before the break.
The home defence failed to clear their lines in the 42nd minute and Tallan Mitchell drove home and, only a minute later, Olly Redd got in behind to lob Vernon and give St Blazey a 4-1 interval lead.
Wellington kept their opponents at bay for much of the second half before Mitchell grabbed his second in the 68th minute while Burrell completed his hat-trick nine minutes from time, heading home to make it 6-1.
The scoring was completed in the 86th minute when skipper Jack Calver drove home St Blazey’s seventh.
