WELLINGTON could parade as many as three new signings in tonight’s Somerset Premier Cup first round tie at home to Wells City (7.45).

Wellington were frantically trying to get the paperwork completed yesterday in a bid to play all three. “It has to be done 24 hours before the start of the game,” said Wellington manager Clive Jones whose side have been struggling in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League. “I have to do something. We made mistakes against Exmouth on Sunday (lost 2-0) and we were punished. They were a very good side and deserved to win. But we had good spells and I thought we played some nice football at times.”

Wellington’s opponents tonight play in the first division of the Toolstation League and are lying third in the table, a point behind leaders Calne Town with a game in hand.

“They’re playing well so it won’t be easy,” added Jones. “They’ve nothing to lose in the tie.”

Meanwhile, Wellington are home again on Saturday when they play in the league against Odd Down who are lying 13th, but only have four more points than Wellington, such is the dogfight for points among the lower teams. Wellington moved off the bottom last week after beating Tavistock 3-1 at home, but they dropped back again after the weekend’s round of games.

Wellington Reserves are away to University of Exeter 3rds in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League while Hemyock are home to first division highflyers Exwick Villa in the Devon Senior Cup.

Wellington A, top of Division Two in the Invest Southwest Taunton Saturday League, play Nether Stowey in the Seward Cup on Friday while Wellington side Moortown are away to Bravehearts in the first division of the Keyline Somerset Sunday League.

Wellington’s attacking midfielder Josh Wadham, who was sent off in the second half against Exmouth Town on Sunday, has turned down the chance to join Willand Rovers who now play in the Southern League. He now faces suspension but it will not apply to him playing Southern League football.
