WELLINGTON Wildcats could not quite match the scoring levels of the previous weekend as their season ended with a 3-0 defeat away to Banwell Ladies in Division One of the Somerset Women’s Football League.
Wildcats were in the ascendancy for much of the first half, but were unable to turn possession into goals, largely due to the excellence of the Banwell ‘keeper who made several fine stops and was duly awarded the Banwell player of the match. At the other end Wildcats defence was as firm as ever, limiting Banwell to just a couple of chances as they game was level at half-time.
Playing into the wind in the second half, Wildcats made a change in formation, which although led to more attacking chances, also left them exposed at the back, which Banwell capitalised on to score two one-on-one chances in quick succession. A late penalty sealed Banwell’s victory, while Jess Regan was unlucky to see her shot superbly saved at full stretch by the Banwell keeper to deny Wildcats a deserved consolation goal at the death. Despite the loss, the performance each and every Wildcats player gave, gives confidence that they will continue to be competitive at the top end of the division next season.
Wildcats player of the day, sponsored by Mundy Veneer Ltd, was Georgia Purdy
