A WELLINGTON player was a member of the triumphant Taunton team which won the European Women’s Over 35s Tennis Championships in La Manga, Spain.
Liz Deem, who plays for Wellington Tennis Club, linked up with three other girls to represent GB and win gold.
The team qualified for the competition by becoming National Over 35s Senior Competition winners last year.
Liz and Kerry Quirk played doubles, while Kate Brown and Claire Raddan, represented GB in the doubles.
Their exciting tennis journey started by beating Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium in their box without dropping a set in either the singles or doubles.
They then competed in a tight semi-final against another GB team with a loss of one singles, the deciding doubles rubber with Liz and Kenny giving them the win into the final against the Netherlands.
The final was very closely fought with both Claire and Kate coming through thrilling marathon matches in the singles, making the proud Taunton team winners of the tournament.
The team had a wonderful time in Spain and built up a very good team spirit.
They have now been invited to compete in next year’s competition as defending champions.
