WELLINGTON should be able to field a stronger squad for Saturday’s home game against Winscombe in Western Counties West (2.30).
It will be the first meeting between the sides since Wellington beat Winscombe 45-17 in the final of the Somerset Vase at North Petherton towards the end of last season.
Back rowers Will Hinchcliffe (available) and Danny Lee (ill) missed the 38-10 home win over Wadebridge Camels at the weekend while Cam Venn had not fully recovered from a leg injury.
“We’re hoping all three will be available,” said coach Allyn Chetland. “It will also take some of the pressure off the second team who have been struggling to raise a full side recently.”
“At the moment selection has been hit and miss because players have not been available for one reason or another. Hopefully incoming players will rectify the situation.
“The boys again put in a good shift against Wadebridge. I don’t think there is any question who were the better side.”
Wellington remain fourth in the table, only six points behind second-placed St Austell. They are 11 points behind leaders Sidmouth, so they need to focus on the runners-up spot at the moment although there is still plenty of rugby to be played.
Wiveliscombe, who have made a dream start to the season in Somerset Premier, will be chasing their 11th successive victory when they play at home to seventh-placed Yatton (2.30).
It is a remarkable run by Wivey who have not been able to field a settled side, making up to three or four changes every weekend.
However, the spirit within the side is so good it has enabled them to play some splendid rugby, although the weekend’s home game against Minehead Barbarians was very close.
Wellington 2nds will be looking to end a lean run when they play at home to Chew Valley in Somerset One while Wiveliscombe 2nds are home to their Winscombe counterparts in Somerset Two South.
