WIVELISCOMBE will be looking to end a 12-year losing run against neighbours Wellington when the sides play each other in the annual Boxing Day rugby clash at The Rec (2.15).

Wellington have been the dominant force in these derby games since the 2007-08 season when they lost 25-15 at The Rec.

Although some games have been close, Wellington have chalked up a string of victories.

Wellington won fairly comfortably in the league game on the same ground at the beginning of the month but they would be making a big mistake if they did not take this game seriously.

“There’s something about Boxing Day games which make them so different,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland. “There is always a big crowd and plenty of atmosphere.

“We will be approaching this game as we do every Boxing Day. We will be able to play with freedom because there are no points at stake - only pride,” added Chetland who has himself been on the losing side against Wiveliscombe.

“The lads can go out there and express themselves.”

Wellington will be without back rower Dan Lee (knee ligaments) and Ryan Marke (recurrence of a shoulder injury), while Joe Dyke could miss the game after suffering a recent head injury.

Wiveliscombe have been struggling since being promoted to Western Counties West this season, mainly through injuries and unavailability, while Wellington are flying high.

Wiveliscombe coach Peter Stone said: “We will not be anywhere near full strength.”

Among those missing will be winger Jake Sharland, prop Will Ellis, second row Ross Pearson, centre James Gibbs and flanker Sam Haberfield.

The match between the clubs’ second teams at Plain Pond is expected to kick off at 11.00. Both sides have been playing well this season.
