WELLINGTON will pull away from the bottom of the table if they beat Torquay Athletic in Western Counties West on Saturday.

Only three points separate the bottom four teams and Wellington, unlike the teams immediately above them, will have had a fortnight’s break from rugby.

Their game against Torquay, who are tenth in the table, is the only one being played in the division.

Wellington have won only two of their matches while Torquay’s record is won four, lost four.

“The lads are fresh and looking forward to the game,” said Wellington coach Laurence Ovens yesterday. “It is an important match for us. We’re under no illusions about what we have to do. In fact the next five or six matches are massively important for us.”

Wellington have not won a game since they beat Burnham on Sea 14-10 away seven weeks ago.

There have been some encouraging displays since then but also some disappointing ones.

Wiveliscombe have won five successive games in Somerset Premier but they are without a game this weekend which is a pity following their impressive 35-17 away win over Hornet 2nd XV over the weekend. It is always good to keep playing when confidence is high.

Wellington 2nd XV, 31-28 away winners over Old Bristolians on Saturday, have no match this weekend.

Wiveliscombe 2nds have a rearranged fixture away to their Chard counterparts in Somerset One, the game having been postponed recently following an outbreak hand, foot and mouth disease at the South Somerset club. Wivey were 20-7 winners at home to their Minehead counterparts on Saturday.
