WELLINGTON Rugby Club are going ahead with plans for an inter-club afternoon at the Athletic Ground tomorrow week (October 31), writes Barry Knott.

“We’re hoping to field two senior sides, plus vets, under 18s and hopefully some girls,” said Wellington club coach Allyn Chetland. “It will be ten a side touch rugby with about 40 or 50 players involved. We’re hoping to start at about noon. The bar will be open at 3pm.

“We’re still concerned about whether we will be able to play Wiveliscombe on Boxing Day. If we can’t we will definitely do something.”

Chetland is still hopeful there will be some form of competitive rugby this season. “At the moment, we have no idea when that will be,” he added.

“We’re still training once a week and one or two older players have come back hoping to play again.”

The bar at the rugby club will also be open tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe’s chairman and player Jake Sharland is less optimistic about a return to competitive rugby this season.

Wiveliscombe have already reduced training days from twice-weekly to one day, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

“I would be surprised if we got back to playing any rugby this season as we know it,” said Sharland. “I don’t see how we will do it. What we definitely need to do is to keep the club open to bring in some much-needed revenue because we still have bills to pay.

“It’s very frustrating for everyone – for the club itself, the players and supporters. But it’s important to keep everyone safe.”
