HOLYWELL Lake have pulled off a double in the Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League - and in some style, too!

Having already won the Ken Bright Cup, they edged out Cottage Pies on their own alley by just five pins to win the Gerald Thorne Championship.

Cottage Pies 364, Holywell Lake 369: A thrilling season full of twists and turns came down to the last game of the season as first took on second in a winner take all clash at the Cottage. Pies, searching for their first taste of silverware, saw Jon Goldsworthy hit the top score of the match with 56 to help his side to a competitive score. Holywell Lake had Alex Smith score an all-important 52 in their chase and they just managed to get over the line.

Relyon 281, Reservists 360: Reservists sealed a third place finish with a comfortable 79-pin win over five-man Relyon at the Conservative Club. Mike Hutchings, one of Relyon’s best players this season, scored 49 for the Bedders who put on a good performance under the circumstances. Reservists had Phil Powell hit a fine 57 in reply as they picked up the win and the points.

Oaks 357, Bell Green 361: Bell Green signed off their season with a four pin away win over Oaks at the Blue Ball, a result that saw them finish fourth. Mike Shire had scored 52 for Oaks who totalled a competitive score. Mark Wardell hit a solid 50 for the Bee Gees to cap a strong second half of the season.

Fireguard A 346, Home Guard II 334: Fireguard A finished their season by taking the Football Club derby bragging rights by seeing off Home Guard II by 12 pins, with Will Leak the player of the match with his great 56 for the hosts. Chris Winter, Rich Henwood and Home Guard captain, Paul Williams, all scored 48 in the HGII chase, but it was not enough to get the win.

OBA 344, Queens Legs 361: Queens Legs finished their season in style with a 17-pin win away to OBA on the upstairs alley of the Victoria Arms. Denver Clarke scored a tidy 48 for OBA who found their alley a little uncooperative on the night. Queens Legs saw Stuart Sutton hit a classy 63 to see them to joint sixth place.

Shooters 370, Rebels 365: Shooters ended their campaign with a good five pin win over Rebels at the Victoria Arms with Keith Harcombe once again the main man for Shooters with a good 52. Jon Sellick hit the highest score of the match with 55 for Rebels, but they just came up short. Missing out on the three points means Rebels finish joint sixth this year alongside Queens Legs.

Club Rockers 334, Report Centre A 299: Club Rockers ended their season with a 35-pin home win over Report Centre A at the Institute, with Celtlan Hyland and James Morrison both scoring strong 52s for the Rockers. J Cottrel hit 45 in the away sides chase, but Report Centre A fell victim to the tricky alley on the night. Report Centre A’s league campaign may be over, but they now look ahead to their Wooden Spoon play-off against Home Guard IV at the Cottage on the dreaded Friday 13th!
